Amaro Lanari Junior (1913 - 1999)

Amaro Lanari Júnior was born in Ouro Preto on October 25, 1913 and died in Belo Horizonte on December 7, 1999. He was an engineer, public administrator, teacher and entrepreneur. Son of Amaro Lanari and Marianna de Andrade Lanari, he graduated in civil engineering from the Escola de Minas e Metalurgia de Ouro Preto, in the class of 1936.


He carried out several activities, such as chief engineer of Lamination and Drawing at Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo-Mineira, construction engineer of the Brasil/Bolivia Railroad, chief engineer of Siderúrgica Aliperti, in São Paulo, president of Companhia Aços Especiais Itabira S.A – Acesita, in 1957, and president of Usinas Siderúrgicas de Minas Gerais, Usiminas, for 18 years, between 1958 and 1976.

In the academic area, he was a professor of general metallurgy and steel at the Escola Politécnica de São Paulo, between 1943 and 1958. 1964, vice president and president of the Brazilian Institute of Steel, from 1963 to 1968. Represented Brazil at the International Iron and Steel Institute, between 1971 and 1976, and was superintendent director of the Brazilian Institute of Nuclear Quality, from 1979 to 1983. Great connoisseur of the steel industry, commissioned by the federal government, he carried out a long study entitled “New Bases for a Steel Policy”, which was concluded in November 1978.

His knowledge and deep experience in the steel industry aroused the interest of companies and international organizations, such as the World Bank, for which he provided consulting services in the steel industry, and the Government of Peru – SIDERPERU in 1980. Between 1983 and 1985 he was president of FIAT Automóveis do Brasil and, later, between 1985 and 1987, he was president of the state-owned holding company Siderbrás. From 1993 to 1997, he was vice president of the Development Bank of Minas Gerais (BDMG), having been a member of the Board of Trustees of Fundação Dom Cabral for six terms, between 1984 and 1999.

was an engineer, public administrator, teacher and businessman from Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Son of Amaro Lanari and Marianna de Andrade Lanari, he graduated in 1936 from the Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto.

He successively served as chief engineer for Rolling and Drawing mills at Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo-Mineira (currently ArcelorMittal Aços Longos), engineer for the Brazil-Bolivia Railroad and chief engineer for Siderúrgica Aliperti, in São Paulo, Brazil.

He was president of Companhia Aços Especiais Itabira S.A. — Acesita, now Aperam South America — (1957) and Usiminas (1958–1976).

He also presided over Fiat Automóveis S.A. (1983-1985), he was vice-president of the board of Tenenge (1983-1985) and president of Siderbrás (1985-1987), at the invitation of president-elect Tancredo Neves.

He was a full professor of General Metallurgy and Steel at the Escola Politécnica de São Paulo (1943-1958) at the University of São Paulo.

He also presided over the Instituto Brasileiro de Siderurgia (1963-1968).
